South Africa's Under-23 soccer team, has been handed what appears on paper an easy draw in the qualifiers for the Olympic Games to be held in Beijing, China in 2008.

According to a draw conducted by the World soccer governing body (Fifa), South Africa will host neighbours Namibia in the first round, which takes place during the first weekend of September, with the return leg set for October.

Zimbabwe have also been draw against relatively easy opponents as they face Tanzania in the first round at home in September before making the trip to Tanzania for the second leg in October.

South Africa and Zimbabwe are some of the seeded teams while Namibia and Tanzania are unseeded.

The second round will be played between February and March next year with the final round set for the first weekend of June 2007 up to March 2008.

A total of 34 teams will battle it out in the first round. The paired teams will play two matches on a home and away basis with the winner qualifying for the second round.

Other seeded teams include Zambia, Senegal, Ivory Coast, Ethiopia, Congo DR, Uganda, Algeria, Egypt, Guinea, Libya, Burkina Faso, Rwanda, Sudan, Botswana and Malawi.

The unseeded teams are Benin, Central African Republic, Chad, Comoros, Djibouti, Equatorial Guinea, Gambia, Guinea Bissau, Lesotho, Liberia, Mauritania, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Sierra Leone, Somalia and Tanzania.

Tunisia, Mali, Morocco, Ghana, Nigeria, Cameroon and Angola got byes in the first round and will only join the rest in the second round of the qualifiers.

In the second round, a total of 24 teams will fight for the right to play in the third round in which teams will be drawn into groups. The teams include 17 winners of the first round and seven teams with a bye from the first round.

The 12 winners of the second round will then be divided into three groups of four teams who will play on a round robin basis with the winner of each group qualifying for the tournament in 2008.

South Africa’s national Under-23 team suffered a third defeat in as many weeks after going down 2-0 against Mali in Stade Omnisport Modibo Keita in Bamako on Thursday night.

Sekou Camara came off the bench and scored in a space of six minutes to give Mali an emphatic victory over AmaGlug-glug.

Camara broke the deadlock on 72nd minute after latching onto fellow substitute Adama Sedibe’s cross from the left.

Camara completed his brace from a replica cross set up by another substitute Souleymane Dembele who also posted a perfect cross from the left flank for the latter to beat the out-streched Lee Langenveldt in goals.

The South Africans have themselves to blame for not taking full advantage of chances created in the opening stanza.

Jomo Cosmos’ speedy striker Calvin Kadi was presented with a scoring chance in the 17th minute but failed to convert from an inviting through pass from Thokozani Mshengu. Mshengu had made a brilliant run into space through the host’s defence.

Kadi was at it again five minutes later when, after latching on a through pass, he again failed to capitalise with the keeper at his mercy.

With the preliminary Olympic qualifying match against Namibia only two months away, coach Steve Komphela still has a lot to do if AmaGlug-glug hope to represent the country at the Beijing Olympics in 2008.

The South Africans will play the return leg against Mali on Sunday.

Meanwhile, AmaGlug-glug’s scheduled friendly match against Senegal on June 29 and July 2 remains on hold following the latter’s withdrawal at the 11th hour citing financial constraints.

Safa’s Director of Competitions Barney Kujane is still trying to convince the local football association to go on with the match

Robyn Johannes broke South Africa's Under-23 side’s goal scoring drought when he converted from the penalty spot on the stroke of halftime to earn Amaglug-glug a 1-1 draw against Mali in the final leg of the two-legged friendly series on Sunday afternoon.

Steve Komphela's side lost the first leg 2-0.

Against Mali on Sunday, it was a better showing by the South Africans but their failure to string decent passes was once again their worst enemy.

Mali broke the deadlock through Sekou Camara after 23 minutes. Sekou, the two-goal hero from the first leg, picked himself up to convert from the penalty spot after he was fouled inside the box by Johannes.

It took Amaglug-glug almost 30 minutes to penetrate the resolute Malian rearguard. Excellent build-up involving Bernard Parker and Bonginkosi Macala almost resulted into an equalizer, but defender Yaya Doumbia made a timely block to deny the Benoni Premier United midfielder at the near post.

Macala earned the visitors a penalty after he was brought down inside the box by the host goalkeeper Mahamadou Sidibe.

Johannes stepped up and fired his spot into the left-bottom corner of Sidibe's goals to level the score.

The second half did not produce except when second half substitute Calvin Kadi smashed his shot against the cross near the end.

The South Africans had launched a counter-attack when another substitute, Bongani Mbele, pounced on Johannes' diagonal long pass to lay-off on Kadi's path.

Komphela's side will wrap the African Safari Tour with two matches against Senegal Under-23 on Thursday and Sunday

Namibia are the first opponents for the South Africa Under-23 team on their road to the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Amaglug-glug face their Southern African neighbours in a two-leg preliminary round on September 3 and October 8.

Should they reach the second round, Amaglug-glug will be among 23 other teams - including Tunisia, Mali, Morocco, Ghana, Nigeria, Cameroon and Angola - who all obtained a bye from the preliminary round.

That should send a shiver down the spine of the South African team as they will have to face strong opposition long before the group stages begin.

If the South Africans come through the two rounds unscathed, they will then be divided with 11 other winners into three groups of four teams next June.

Only the group leaders will represent Africa at the Olympic Games after Fifa revealed that only three places have been allocated to the continent.

Before any thoughts of Olympic participation, Amaglug-glug must make amends for their disastrous start to their overseas trip after a 2-0 loss and 1-1 draw with Mali.

And, it only gets tougher. Next up is Senegal in the remaining two games of this west African safari.

A tap-in by University of Pretoria striker Bongani Macala deep into first half gave Amaglug-glug a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Senegal Under-23 in a warm-up friendly match played at Stade Iba Mar Diop in Dakar on Thursday afternoon.

It was the South African national Under-23 side's first away victory since the start of the build-up to the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Steve Komphela's side suffered a 2-0 loss before a 1-1 draw against Mali last week. But Thursdy's match saw a determined Amaglug-glug side. The South Africans were the better side throughout and held on against the young Teranga Lions who looked dangerous each time they surged forward.

However, brave goalkeeping by Orlando Pirates' Sezo Meyiwa and water-tight defence marshaled by captain Robyn Johannes put the host at bay for most of the game.

Defender Thapelo Tshilo posted the first attempt at Senegal goals but headed wide from Thokozani's cross following a corner kick.

Bongani Mbele inspired his side's attacks and was the chief engineer in Macala's 36th minute goal.

Mbele made a strong run down the left flank and after outpacing two defenders, fired a scorcher that Sidaty Sarr in Senegal goals, could only parry on the path of Macala to tap home from close range.

Prior to the goal, the hosts survived a quick counter-attack after Joseph Henyekane was caught off-guard at left back. But the latter made the quickest of recoveries to block Laye Kane's shot inside the goal area.

Young Tlou Molekwane from Kaizer Chiefs juniors made his debut at right back. The former under-17 defender had a nervous start but adapted as the game progressed.

He cleared a goal-bound ball off the line on the hour-mark after Meyiwa was caught off his line.

Meanwhile, the South African Under-17’s lost 2-1 against their Senegal counterparts in a curtain-raiser match. Majimbo's pulled one back via Masibuzane Zongo's brilliant free-kick in the 68th minute.

What I like most, and hoping that it is going to be an on-going thing, is that the two teams, Under 23 and under 17 are travelling together. i also hope that the two coaches will work together and we get to have a uniformed style of play.

It is a good thing indeed but wait 2008, all this will be gone it will be two new coaches for both teams. and half of the players if not more for each team will be nowhere to be seen.

The goal scoring drought that has haunted Amaglug-glug continued on Thursday afternoon as the national Under-23 team were held to a goalless draw by visiting Malaysia at Huntersfield Stadium in Katlehong.

Steve Komphela’s side failed to convert over a dozen clear-cut scoring chances that they created on a windy day at the township stadium.

On numerous occasions when it looked like Amaglug-glug had breached the Asians defence they failed to find the back of the net wasting chances that on an ordinary day even an amateur team would have converted.

With the Malaysians bringing a team largely composing of Under-21 players it was obvious the home team would dominate and they did just that but failed to find the much-needed goal.

Komphela, who has been rotating his huge squad of players lately, started with a lone striker in Bernard Parker but the Premier United player was less effective early only coming to life in the second half.

But Parker was first to miss a series of chances created with the wasteful Thokozani Mshengu.

The second half began on a lively note with plenty goalmouth action giving an indication that there might some goals but that was not to be sending the crowd home disappointed.

Even substitute Calvin Sosibo could not do much to change the score sheet as he also fluffed a scoring chance after being set up by fellow substitute Richard Rantjie.

As time ticked towards the end of the game Daine Klate watched as his shot rebounded off the upright and then moments later Romano Scott blasted his shot straight at the keeper when it looked easier to score.

Tsepo Masilela was next to miss after negotiating his way through a crowded box before shooting into the side netting while Rantjie shot weakly from close in a desperate attempt to win the game for Amaglug-glug.

The South African Under-23 side, AmaGlug-glug, beat Malaysia 3-0 at Olen Park on Sunday afternoon and should have scored more goals as they totally dominated the opposition.

This was a much improved performance after the 0-0 draw earlier in the week.

The opening goal came in the 2nd minute when Bongani Mbhele scored with a left-footed shot.

The homeside doubled the score in the 20th minute when Lawrence Molekwane scored with a header from a Daine Klate free-kick.

Bernard Parker got the third goal when he scored with a penalty kick after he was adjudged to have been fouled in the area.

During the second half AmaGlug-glug spent long periods of time in the Malaysian half but failed to add to the first half tally, had they taken their chances they could have quite easily have doubled the score.

Spoiler:

It was about time the start scoring Very Happy
