The annual 2006 Telkom Charity Cup was launched in Johannesburg on Monday. Once again, this year, the teams participation will entirely be decided by the stakeholders and the supporters.

Four teams receiving the most votes will battle it out on August 5 at the FNB Stadium. The target set for this year is R3.5 million which will be donated to charity organisations.

Zikie Molusi, Telkom's advertising and promotions executive, says R1.3 million was raised for charity organisations last year.

This year's voting system will also see the inclusion of two teams, Wits University and Benoni United, which have just been promoted. Relegated teams will not take part in the voting process.

Tickets for the event will cost R35 for adults and R20 for children.

Mamelodi Sundowns co-coach Neil Tovey said he's set his sights on the forthcoming Telkom Charity Cup on August 5 in his attempt to build a reputation for himself as one of the best coaches in the country.

He said winning the traditional season-opening cup will silence his critics and prove that steering the expensively assembled Tshwane-based outfit to their first Castle Premiership championship in six years was no fluke.

"Winning the Charity Cup will prove that I'm one of the best in the business," he said.

Sundowns beat Bloemfontein Celtic on penalties in 2005's final.

Sundowns lead Charity Cup voting

With less than two weeks remaining before voting closes for the Telkom Charity Cup, Mamelodi Sundowns appear all but certain to participate and defend their title in this year’s edition of the one-day spectacle.

The Chloorkop club has cruised into six figures in the on-going voting process and has opened a yawning lead at the top.

By this morning the Brazilians were approaching 119 000 mark which looks to give them one leg into the FNB Stadium on August 5.

Behind Sundowns, in a distant second, was Black Leopards with about 82 700, while Orlando Pirates followed close behind in third place with 82 100 votes.

Kaizer Chiefs and Bloemfontein Celtic were both separated by just less than 3 000 votes in the 80 000 votes region, with Golden Arrows lagging way behind with 37 200 votes.
