Those are rules to be mastered by the referees at world cup but I see they(referees) still struggle with the basic ones.

The standard of refreeing in this world cup is way below. I miss those days of Mr Pierluigi "Chiskop" Collina

He was the best refree ever.

Indeed this man knew his wistle.Has he not been offered a position to do with training referees?I think a lot of young referees can learn a lot from him.

He has been appointed by Serie A to take care of the refree selection. he is the one who selects the refrees bofre the games. he should be in charge of their training also.

A lot of good game have been spoiled by the refrees these days. Maybe they should check the TV replays before making crucial decision like red cards and penalties.

He deserves it.

I think checking on tv replays could assist in reducing referee errors.Ofcourse incidents occure swiftly during a game and the referee may miss some which is normal but the tv reviews could help him in that regard.

I think this is applicable in rugby matches and it could be wise for Fifa to introduce it in soccer.

Did you guys notice how the refrees were lenient yesterday? and at one point i even forgot that there was a ref on the field. thats what we want to see. not to see a ref after every 30 seconds.

English referee Graham Poll has been sent home from the World Cup, following a high-profile blunder in the Group F match between Australia and Croatia last week.

Fifa took the expected action after Poll failed to dismiss Croatian defender Josip Simunic - despite showing the player two yellow cards.

Poll's error was compounded by his decision to book Simunic a third time at the final whistle - at which point he did mete out a belated red card.

Poll's exit was the culmination of a disappointing tournament for the Hertfordshire official, who dismissed Togo's Yaovi Abalo for a second bookable offence against South Korea in unorthodox fashion - showing first a red card and then the yellow to Abalo.

Fifa also confirmed that Russian official Valentin Ivanov - the man in the middle for the infamous Portugal v Holland clash - will take no further part in the tournament.

Ivanov handed out 16 yellow cards and four reds to create a new World Cup record for the number of sanctions issued in a single match.

It gets better

Graham Poll has decided to retire from international tournaments after being sent home early from the World Cup.

The Tring official's event was blighted by his high-profile blunder in Croatia's match with Australia - when he booked Josip Simunic three times.

And after Fifa confirmed he would be one of 14 referees sent home before the quarter-finals, he revealed he would not officiate in internationals again.

"It's time for another English referee to have a go," he told Sky Sports.

The finals were Poll's third major tournament after he officiated at the 2002 World Cup and 2000 European Championship.

But he admitted his devastation after his "dream" of taking charge of a World Cup final was ended by a poor performance in the Croatia-Australia tie.

"Certainly what happened a week ago is something I deeply regret, it was inexcusable," admitted the clearly emotional 42-year-old.

"I didn't realise until after the game that, following 23 years of hard work, working up from pub level, my dream was over."

thats the only good thing that FIFA did during this world cup. I don't understand why they still give the games to european refs when two european teams are playing against each other. why not give it to refs from other continents.?

Damon recommends technology use
Sunday July 02 2006
Leading Premier Soccer League (PSL) referee Jerome Damon has called on local professional football to consider utilising technology to improve communication between match officials.

Damon - who arrived back in the country on Saturday after serving as a fourth official in the 2006 World Cup in Germany - said that even though the equipment was expensive, it would do a lot of good to his colleagues' decision-making on the field.

"The technology will bring about a vast improvement to the swiftness and quality of decision-making for the officials in the PSL.

"If the costs are too high, we could then possibly opt for the use of less expensive mobile phones, which I was told are used very successfully in the proffessional league of the United Arab Emirates (UAE)," Damon told the official Premier Soccer League website.

When asked to elaborate, Damon explained that the phones are placed inside pouches and tied to the upper-arm of the match official, and also have a wire that connects them to a speaker.

The only handicap, Damon noticed, was that there could be instances where signal is lost during a match.

Damon also pointed out that even though he understands that there have been questions raised about the standard of refereeing at the 2006 FIFA World Cup, he also still feels that people should consider the tremendous pressure that the whistle-men come under when officiating at such a global event.

"They have 25 cameras at each of the World Cup matches, plus analysts who assess every incident from 15 different angles.

"As a referee, you do not enjoy such luxuries. We have three seconds to make a decision on an incident which we have had only one opportunity to have a look at, there is no action replay," Damon commented.

The Cape Town-based middle-man regards officiating as a fourth official during the Brazil vs Japan match at the 2006 World Cup as one of his career highlights.

Damon was particularly struck by the differences in the pre-match atmosphere in the Brazilian and the Japanese dressing-rooms.

"The Japanese were highly organised and all ready for inspection when I got there, with everybody sitting quitely in their place.

"The Brazilians were a different story, the players were kicking the ball around, and were very down to earth. I had to interrupt a very lively conversation between Ronaldo and Ronaldhino just to be able to continue with my inspection duties. They are a great bunch of people the Brazilians,' Damon commented.
