Former Moroka Swallows’ midfielder Maimane Phiri has signed for two years.

The 32-year-old, who joined Swallows from Ajax Cape Town two years ago, says he is a free agent and that talks with Matsatsantsa have been on since September last year.

“I’m an ambitious person, and therefore I decided it would be best to join an ambitious team; that’s why I joined Supersport United.”

The future of Peter Khoabane at Supersport United remains uncertain following Matsatsantsa’s signing of former Moroka Swallows’ midfielder Alfred Phiri.

Khoabane was in and out of the playing squad last season and he has yet to renew his contract that expires at the end of June.

While Kaizer Chiefs surprised everyone by scooping Shaun Bartlett form under the noses of Mamelodi Sundowns, it looks like the Brazilians may be dealt another blow, with the news that goalkeeper Andre Arendse is on the verge of signing for Supersport United.

Supersport United have signed Uganda international goalkeeper Dennis Onyango, who was the understudy to Postnett Omony during the Cranes’ World Cup qualifying campaign.

However, Matthews added that the Matsatsantsa are still looking to sign an experienced goalkeeper as well, to help Onyango find his feet and also to guide youngster lance Niewenhuis, with Sundowns’ Andre Arendse said to be the man targeted.

“Andre is still contracted to Sundowns, but a player like him would be perfect,” Matthews said

Supersport United’s coach Pitso Mosimane has confirmed that the contracts of veterans Mandla Zwane, Peter Khoabane and Kaitano Tembo will not be renewed when they expire at the end of the month.

Mosimane added that midfielder Dikgang Mabalane, who was on loan to Maritzburg Classic last season, will not be recalled back following interest of the Natal outfit to keep the 26-year-old on.

He also confirmed United’s interest in signing Mamelodi Sundowns’ veteran goalie Andre Arendse, to replace Calvin Marlin, who, ironically, is on his way to Sundowns.

Young keeper Wayne Sandilands, who was on loan Silver Stars last season, is also likely to be recalled.

SuperSport United have announced that former Ajax Cape Town winger, Rowen Hendricks, has signed a two-year deal with the club.

The Cape Town-born player left Ajax three years ago for Russia, where he played for FC Rostov.

"Hendricks has all the requirements a player needs. He has strength, speed, incredible technique and accurate crosses," United's Director of football Stan Matthews told the club's official website.

Meanwhile, United have sold Zimbabwean international Joel Luphahla and midfielder Dikgang 'Terminator' Mabalane, who was on loan at Maritzburg United during the 2005/06 season.

Matthews believes that Hendricks will fit well in the position vacated by Luphahla and Mabalane.

"Rowen will compete with Sipho Mngomezulu for the position," Matthews added.

Supersport winger Joel Luphahla is set to undergo trials in Europe at the end of his contract.

According to Francisco Ferreira of Prosport Agency, his agent, says they are talking to several clubs in Europe and are hopeful that the talented player would break into one of the overseas leagues.

He added that they were also talking to some clubs in South Africa.

Supersport United coach Pitso Mosimane is banking on the good relationship that exists between Matsatsantsa and Silver Stars to land one of his primary targets, Katlego Mashego.

The good nature between the two clubs has seen players like Edward Williams, Wayne Sandilands, Joel Luphahla, Nicholas Chazika, Tony Tsabedze and Lynch Pule moving between the two.

“Look, they want Joel Luphahla and we have given them the go-ahead to talk to him. Maybe we can also get to do the same with Mashego,” Mosimane says.

“He showed last season that he does not only create goals, but also scores his fair share.”

However, the 24-year-old was cagey when approached by Kick Off over the possible transfer. He says his agent Tim Sukazi and club management are discussing the matter and that he will go along with their decision.

Stars boss Larry Brookstone admits that United have shown an interest in Mashego and that they are negotiating terms.

However, he may drag his feet on the deal as two of Stars’ midfielders, Stanley Kgatla and Koketso Mmotong, have been on trial in Sweden.

“If they are signed it could have a bearing on the Mashego deal because we cannot afford to lose too many key players,” he says.

SuperSport United are looking for another goalkeeper following the departure of Calvin Marlin, who joined neighbours Mamelodi Sundowns at the end of the 2005/06 season.

According to the Pretoria News, the goalkeeper will join Wendell Robinson and Dennis Onyango, the new signing from Uganda.

SuperSport lost out to Orlando Pirates in the race to sign former Jomo Cosmos No.1 goalkeeper Avril Phali. This after Phali declined United's offer and instead signed a three-year contract with Pirates last week.

Supersport United are reportedly interested in signing Lobtrans Gunners and Zebras’ midfielder Tshepo Motlhabankwe.

The Pretoria club have according to reliable sources in Botswana been looking closely at the player, whose contract with the Gunners is scheduled to expire at the end of this month.

‘Talk-Talk’, as he is affectionately known in Botswana, has been instrumental in saving the struggling Lobatse side from relegation in the Mascom Premier League.

Famous for his free-kicks and a knack for beautiful goals, the player has also been a pillar of strength in the resurgent Zebras team assembled by erstwhile coach, Jelusic Veselin.

Meanwhile, the Botswana Football Association (BFA) are reportedly done with the appointment of a new coach for the Zebras.

Colwyn Rowe, a British FA instructor, is said to have been interviewed through video conferencing earlier this week after meeting another BFA official in Germany last week.

However, the announcement has not been made yet and the BFA refuses to concede Rowe has been preferred over the popular Major David Bright, currently working as interim coach.

Supersport United and Bafana Bafana defender Siboniso Gaxa (22) has jetted out of the country to attend trials with Swedish outfit Hammarby FC.

Gaxa, who has been with the Tshwane outfit for four years, told Kick Off before his departure: “I have been waiting for this opportunity for a long time and will do my best in order to succeed in Sweden. It will be a stepping stone to bigger things in the future.”

Glyn Binkin the players business manager confirmed to Kick Off that the player left the country last night (Monday), “Siboniso jetted out of the country last night for Sweden.

“The Supersport policy is not to stand in the way of a player bettering his carreer and if the trial is successful he could be playing his football in Sweden.”

Gaxa, who has played for AmaZulu juniors, UPE/FCK Soccer School of Excellence, has represented South Africa at Under-17 and Under-20 levels and also has nine caps for Bafana Bafana.

His contract at United ends on 30 June, 2007.

Katlego “Killer” Mphela will not be returning to France next season and will continue with his career at Supersport United in the up-coming season.

Mphela, who was on loan at Matsatsantsa from Strasbourg, discloses that the Tshwane based outfit have reached an agreement with the European club.

“Its official, I’ll be with United the season that lies ahead. There is no other club that interests me in the Castle League except United currently. I’m positive that my future is with Supersport and hopefully things will work out well for us next season,” he says on United’s website.

“I would therefore like to thank Supersport for the opportunity they gave me to prove myself. I’m also looking forward to put more effort next season. To Matsatsantsa supporters, they must brace themselves for some silverware come next season.

Mphela, who comes from Brits in the Northwest Province, finished as one of Supersport’s top scorers with 10 goals last season. He was second behind fellow striker Abram Raselemane.

Supersport United have signed striker Katlego Mashego from Silver Stars, in a deal that will see two players from the Matsatsantsa, move in the opposite direction.

Mashego has signed a three-year deal with Supersport following a two-year stint with the Lions of the North.

“I will certainly miss my team mates at the club but so is life. I am now faced with a new challenge of which I am looking forward to it. I thank all members of the technical team for their input and contribution towards my career,” he told Silver Stars’ official website.

Abass Inusah and Joel Luphahla are the duo moving to Silver Stars, with both players having signed two-year contracts with the club, while an extra R400 000 will also be paid to Silver Stars.

Stars also revealed that Koketso Mmotong has extended his contract for three more years, keeping him at the club until 2010.

Mabalane still undecided

Former Jomos Cosmos midfielder, Dikgang Mabalane is still uncertain where he is going to play next season.

The former Supersport United winger, who is still contracted to the club for one more season, played for Maritzburg United on loan towards the end of last season.

“I was happy with the time I spent at Maritzburg United. The team is not yet where Supersport is in terms of professionalism, but they are getting there. They have the potential to achieve more, but one has got to give them time.”

Mabalane reveals that Maritzburg did make him an offer but adds that he is still considering his options.

“I have been holding lot of meetings with regard to my future and hopefully I will know exactly where I will play my football next season in the near future.”

Mabalane was linked with a move to Ajax Cape Town but an interest from the Urban Warriors side seems to have waned.

Castle Premiership campaigners SuperSport United have signalled their intentions ahead of the 2006/07 season by unveiling a total of eight new players in their squad.

Coach Pitso Mosimane is adamant that the high number of newcomers is appropriate, and will enable 'Matsantsa a Pitori' to be in a better position to challenge for major honours in the upcoming season.

"If you want to seriously compete, you do need the numbers," he told his club's official website.

"Numbers mean a lot; we have lost a lot of players. With a stronger squad, I believe we will be serious contenders for some silverware in the coming season."

The new players are Ugandan goalkeeper Dennis Onyango, defenders Isaac Mabotsa and James Matola, midfielders Maimane Phiri, Shane Poggenpoel and Teko Modise, winger Rowan Hendricks and striker Katlego Masehgo.

The most notable addition to SuperSport's squad is Maimane Phiri, who has signed a two-year contract, after spending some time at Moroka Swallows and Ajax Cape Town.

Supersport United winger Richard Rantjie says he is desperate to rejoin newly-promoted Benoni Premier United.

The Amaglug-glug star, who was in and out of the Matsatsantsa first team last season due to a recurring knee injury, says his heart is still with the East Rand outfit.

“I’m still contracted to Supersport, so it will be a matter of negotiation between the two clubs as Premier United are keen to have me back,” Rantjie says.

I don’t have a problem with anyone at Supersport; they are all very good to me, but I just feel that the time has come for me to make a move and return to my roots.

“I enjoyed my football with the Rabbits when I was there before and it is good that most of the players I know are still there,” he adds.

Dennis Masina’s return to Supersport has also raised concerns as to whether Rantjie still has a role to play, with the duo, as well as Sipho Mngomezulu and Abram Raselemane, all competing for the rightwing spot.

Ndlela not going anywhere

Supersport United have laughed off rumours circulating in the media that they are set to lose their tall striker Lungisani Ndlela who is rumoured to be leaving for Chloorkop to join Castle Premiership defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns.

“Ndlela is not going anywhere,” says Supersport United Corporate Affairs Manager, David Mazolman Skosana.

“The problem is that some other media houses have their favourite teams and they always link our players with their teams. The issue with Ndlela is no exception.

“The boy has a contract with us and has not shown any signs of being unhappy in the team.”

Skosana has also denied reports that their midfielder, Richard Rantjie may be heading to Benoni Premier United. He says Rantjie is still part of the team and they are not ready to release him to any team.

Maritzburg United are also reportedly making enquiries about the availability of the Under-23 star with a view of taking him down to Kwazulu/Natal.

United want to keep Mphela
Thursday August 24 2006
SuperSport United have re-opened negotiations with French club Strasbourg in their quest to keep striker Katlego Mphela on a permanent basis.

This was confirmed by United Chairperson Khulu Sibiya.

Sibiya told the Pretoria News that their club Chief Executive, Stan Matthews, was currently in consultation with the French team about the striker who was United's second leading goal-scorer with 11 goals in 2005/06.

"It has come to our attention that the player is enjoying himself at United and would like to stay," said Sibiya.

He added: "Strasbourg have got a new coach and apparently Mphela is not in his plans. He is a brilliant player with a lot of potential and our coach Pitso Mosimane has also indicated that he would love to keep him.

"At the moment, Mphela is no longer our player as per the agreement with Strasbourg. When the season ended in May, we honoured the contract and released Mphela to his French club. But I must emphasise that we will not sit back until we get the player to sign a long-term contract with us."

United will kick-off their 2006/07 Castle Premiership campaign with a fixture against Kaizer Chiefs at Loftus Versfeld on Sunday.

Former Supersport United striker Katlego Mphela, who left for French club Strasbourg this past weekend, has had terrible luck since arriving in France.

Speaking to Kick Off from France, “I left South Africa on Friday and when I got to France my luggage was not there, it arrived a day late and when I opened the bag there was nothing, my clothes, boots, sneakers and some of my personal stuff were gone.

“I don’t know whether this happened in South Africa or France. I will be training today for the first time and will see how things go."

Katlego Mphela, who had a great loan spell at Supersport United from Strasbourg, is hoping that a deal can be concluded by his former club Supersport United, so to that he can return home and start playing again.

Mphela has until the 31st August to secure a deal as the transfer deadline is on that day or otherwise he will have to wait until January when the transfer window reopens.

It is also rumoured that Mamelodi Sundowns are after his services and that the price tag of 3 million rand will not be a major stumbling block for the Brazilians.

However, Supersport might have the upperhand in suggesting a swap deal, which will see Mphela return to United, with winger Daine Klate going to Strasbourg.

Klate went to France and impressed Strasbourg recent trials and this deal may see him secure a move abroad, with a small sum of money being exchanged between the two clubs.

The exodus from East London continues with former Bush Bucks’ defender Thabo September saying he cannot wait to be part of the Supersport United’s back four.

The former Imbabala defender added that his fitness level was fast reacing the needed level.

“Just to be part of the Supersport family is motivating. This is one of the best teams in the country. Supersport also have the best defenders in the country, so I can’t wait to get fit and play again.”

The 23-year-old says he is also happy that his former teammate at Bush Bucks, James Chamanga, got an opportunity to play against Kaizer Chiefs in the League opener at the weekend.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
According to the Daily News, the club's Directors are deeply concerned that they have yet to see a return on their off-season spending spree.

Maritzburg Chairman Farouk Kadodia says they are not putting any formal pressure on the Serbian coach to deliver the goods, but are satisfied he will change the 3-5-2 formation that has yielded just five points from the team's first five matches, which currently sees them languishing in the bottom four of the Castle Premiership standings.

After struggling to get his chosen wing-backs to attack and defend equally well in the 3-5-2 system, Papic will opt for the more conventional 4-4-2 formation for the next match against AmaZulu in Pietermaritzburg in a fortnight, according to Kadodia.

"It's too early for us to panic and to say the coach is in trouble, but we are concerned about the lack of results after doing everything possible to put a good team together for the season," said Kadodia.

He added: "The coach says he's been getting virtually nothing out of the wing-backs and will thus be changing the formation in the hope of improving the results.

"As far as the players are concerned, they must work with the coach to iron out any problems they may have."

Kadodia said Papic had promised to select a more offensive midfield against AmaZulu and planned to create more, and better, scoring opportunities for strikers Sandile Ndlovu and Ibrahim Omotayo.
