Bafana Bafana players were filtering into Durban in their dribs and drabs yesterday (Monday) afternoon for the African Nations Cup qualifier against Chad at King's Park on Saturday but the bulk are expected to arrive today.
And, predictably, there was still no sign of Benni McCarthy. nothing surprising here
By yesterday Orlando Pirates midfielder Benedict Vilakazi, Supersport United defender Ricardo Katza, Ajax Cape Town striker Thembinkosi ‘Terror’ Fanteni and Kaizer Chiefs’ goalkeeper Rowen Fernandez were the local-based players that had arrived.
The Mamelodi Sundowns’ contingent – goalkeeper Calvin Marlin, defender/midfielder Benson Mhlongo, midfielder Godfrey Sapula and forward Surprise Moriri – were due to arrive this morning as they had an evening function to attend in Pretoria last night.
Of the foreign-based players Bradley Carnell, Elrio van Heerden, Aaron Mokoena, and Nasief Morris had arrived.
Safa media liaison Gugu Marawa said the rest of the squad are expected to arrive this morning in time for the team’s first training session in KwaMashu this afternoon.
Marawa would not comment on whether McCarthy would be arriving or if there had been any indication from the Blackburn Rovers striker that he would not be answering his surprise call-up from coach Carlos Alberto Parreira.
“I will not comment on Benni. I will talk about all the other players but not that player,” Marawa said.
McCarthy has already stated that he will not be returning to the Bafana fold until certain requirements are met from Safa, including an apology from the head of delegation to the Nations Cup in Egypt, Mubarak Mohamed.
