Telkom Knockout Cup launched
Monday October 09 2006
Not only did Telkom formally announce its sponsorship of the Telkom Knockout - the Premier Soccer League's biggest cup competition at a press conference earlier on Monday evening - but the country's leading telecommunications giant also unveiled plans to make the new competition one of the most talked about event in sporting circles.
Coupled with innovative plans to make the Telkom Knockout the showpiece of the local soccer calendar, Telkom also launched a new logo and trophy that will leave the foot-balling public in awe.
Telkom's involvement in domestic soccer stretches back seven years through the Company's involvement in the highly successful Telkom Charity Cup, which brings the soccer fraternity closer to needy communities all over the country.
Through its ground-breaking sponsorship of the Telkom Knockout, the Company aims to revolutionise and improve the experience of soccer fans countrywide, while powering South African soccer to greater heights.
The much anticipated tournament will commence on October 28, 2006, with the final being scheduled for December 16, 2006. The tournament format will see all 16 PSL teams competing on a knockout basis for the coveted Telkom Knockout Trophy.
The total prize-money for the tournament breaks all previous records and a breakdown of the amounts winnings is attached separately. All 16 PSL teams will receive rewards based on their progress through the tournament.
"It has been a privilege to work with the PSL over the past seven years to fulfil our aim of supporting, promoting and showcasing local football and its players. Soccer remains the country's number one sport and, through our sponsorship of the Telkom Knockout, Telkom is determined to raise the bar in order to enable local football teams and players to acquit themselves with distinction on the national and international stage," enthused Telkom CEO, Papi Molotsane.
An equally upbeat PSL CEO, Trevor Phillips stated: "We have forged an excellent relationship with Telkom, and the sponsorship has the potential to boost local soccer to new heights. Once the Telkom Knockout kicks off, it will infect the entire population with football fever and the PSL/Telkom partnership is most certainly the shot-in-the arm that domestic soccer currently needs."
Meanwhile, Zikie Molusi, Advertising & Promotions Executive at Telkom, added that exciting plans were underway to attract families to all Telkom Knockout matches, to promote enterprising but fair play by all teams as well as to enhance journalistic reporting of the new competition.
"We are determined to give fans a totally new experience and are confident of attracting many new spectators, especially families, to all Telkom Knockout matches," emphasised Molusi.
In order to bring out the best from all players and teams, various individual and team incentive awards will come into play.
"Candidates for some of these awards will be those individuals who consistently shine for their respective teams, play a pivotal role in guiding their team's fortunes, have a positive impact on players and fans alike, and are an inspiration and encouragement to the youth," explained Molusi.
He added: "We are still in discussions with the PSL over these incentives and the specific criteria for each of these categories will be announced shortly."
There are also incentives for members of the media who will be encouraged to report on the Telkom Knockout from fresh and creative perspectives.
"We are also launching the Telkom Knockout Media Awards that seek to recognise excellence in soccer reporting and broadcasting. Specific criteria will be announced shortly but, in general, the focus is on analytical and insightful reporting that highlights key moments and issues that dominate conversation and shape public opinion," stated Molusi.
"We are still in the process of finalising these details with the relevant stakeholders and will announce specifics in the near future. What the concept of the Media Awards clearly illustrates though, is that Telkom is committed to uplifting soccer standards across all spectrums, on and off the field."
As a caring corporate citizen, Telkom is also determined to cement closer bonds between Telkom Knockout and the footballing public nationwide. Foremost among these initiatives is a concerted drive to make Telkom Knockout matches attractive to family units.
At each daytime match, for instance, specially assigned family or Telkom Fan Zones will include kiddies' areas featuring entertainers, games, a DVD corner, and funfair rides that will be staffed by experienced child-minders.
"We believe soccer is a game for all," said Molusi.
"By attracting family units to the events and ensuring participation on a number of levels, we hope to promote fitness and a healthy lifestyle among the broader community, as well as make the game more appealing to all."
Various promotional activities will also fuel greater public interest and involvement in the Telkom Knockout. Over the duration of the tournament, members of the public will stand to win prizes ranging from match tickets to smart cars and educational bursaries.
"Be on the lookout for these opportunities," quipped Molusi, adding that special Telkom Knockout Phone Cards were also going to be launched. Use of these cards will see a lucky member of the public winning a car.
In addition to the lucrative prize-money on offer to the PSL teams that will participate in the Telkom Knockout, there will also be a major drive to upgrade the foot-balling skills at grass-roots - especially schools - level. Schools could find themselves participating in clinics with PSL players, playing in curtain-raisers to Telkom Knockout matches or providing escorts when the teams run onto the pitch.
"This is going to be a great campaign that focuses on young footballers and football fans, and is aimed at identifying and nurturing the country's foot-balling talent from a young age," explained Molusi.
With so much going on, soccer fans can brace themselves for an extraordinary spectacular, both on and off the field of play. With some of the country's leading entertainers performing at all Telkom Knockout matches, the competition certainly promises the best in soccer, fun and entertainment - for the entire family!

THIS IS HOWMUCH THE WINNER GETS !!! DAMN, thats about double the LEAGUE cchampionship I think ..? DAMN, so that shoud mean teams will place MUCH more emphasis on this comp than the league and I would have loved it if they would donate an X amount per goal scored by the team .. so we have a GOAL fest rather than teams waiting causiosly for penaties

But havin g sed that , I think its time for smaller teams to start BELIVING i themselves and play to win .. Im talking more specifically , Golden Arrows ...
FOr all their good performance in the last 5/6 seasons , we'r ALWAYS out in the 1st round ... HOW DISAPOINTING !!
Really boys , we'v seen how Santos , Celtic , Swallows , Cosmos ..even Supersport have been crowned Cup Champs while for sum reason we just freeze up and bounce out early ...
JUST GETTING TO THE FINAL would REALLY CHANGE things for us , MILION BUCKS , WE"V NEVER HAD MILION BUCKS !! If we show progress and promise we can really impress our sponsor and others ...and improve our deal ..
Cos rt now we'r just coasting ...

Hhayi Bo I Telkom I senzani we Madoda?? I believe Bra 16V is saying to himself "I choe a wrong time to play football" KC was gonna won this Cup with ease and great attacking football. Not Mazinyo era though.
About Arrows Nahtino, its time for them to decide if they are here to unearth the talent for South Africa or to win Cups. But they should make sure that they sell their hot prospect, E.g Mabhudi's, Zothwane's,Sibeko, Ngobese ect. long time ago, and they would have gotten Money while Khanyeza, Zothwane etc.continues to improve for the Country. Its clear Khabo can find any young player and play well for Arrows, so they should create and sell thats how they will get Profit.
Oh else blood youngsters with experience. Play to win Cups.
