Orlando Pirates' chances of qualifying for the semi-finals of the African Champions League took a massive blow when they were held to a 0-0 draw by Hearts of Oak at Ellis Park on Saturday.

Both teams started the match well, but it was the 'Buccaneers' who had the better of chances.

The home team should have taken the lead in the fourth minute when Tyren Arendse found himself unmarked inside the penalty box, but his shot went narrowly wide.

Minutes later Lelo Mbele sent in a perfect cross to Onyekachi Okonkwo, but the midfielder took his time on the ball when the easiest thing was to take a shot at goals and the opportunity went a begging.

Pirates thought they had earned a penalty in the 31st minute when Gift Leremi looked like he was brought down by the Hearts of Oak goalkeeper, but the referee waved play on.

The score remained 0-0 at half-time.

Hearts of Oak started the second half the better side and should have taken the lead in the 64th minute, only for Amankwah Mireku's shot to shoot straight at Bucs 'keeper Francis Chansa.

Pirates then took control of the game and created chance-after-chance but they could not find the back of the net.

Lelo Mbele, Isaac Chansa and Tyren Arendse all had chances to score for the 'Buccaneers' but the Hearts of Oak defence stood firm - with the two teams eventually settling for a goal-less draw.
