Kaizer Chiefs are through to the semi-finals of the SAA Supa 8 after beating a ten-man Golden Arrows 2-0 at FNB Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The home side started the match well and it came as no surprise when they took the lead in the fourth minute after Siyabonga Nkosi finished off a nice Chiefs build-up.

Louis Agyemang almost doubled the Chiefs lead three minutes later, but his goal-bound shot was blocked by Siyabonga Sangweni.

Arrows best chance of the half fell to Mduduzi Nxele in the 19th minute when he was sent through on goals by Mlungisi Gumbi, but Nxele's shot was saved by Chiefs 'keeper Rowen Fernandez.

Gert Schalkwyk wasted a glorious chance for Chiefs when he failed to score whilst he was on a one-on-one situation with Arrows 'keeper Davis Phiri.

The score remained 1-0 in favour of Chiefs at half-time.

Chiefs coach Ernst Middendorp made two changes in the start of the second half, bringing in Kaizer Motaung Jnr and Thabo Mooki for Agyemang and Arthur Zwane respectively.

These substitutions seemed to change the complexion of the game as 'Amakhosi' took control of the game.

Chiefs dominance paid off in the 55th minute when they were awarded a penalty after Nkosi was brought down by Phiri inside the box. Phiri was then sent off for colleting a second yellow card.

David Obua made no mistake from the penalty kick and eventually sent Chiefs through to the semi-finals of the SAA Supa 8 as Arrows never recovered from the 2-0 deficit.

Mamelodi Sundowns joined Kaizer Chiefs in the semi-finals of the SAA Supa 8 Cup when they gave Santos a 4-1 thrashing at the Super Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Sundowns showed greater urgency in the early stages of the match, but Santos managed to close them down effectively.

’The Brazilians’ finally broke the Santos defence in the when Jose Torrealba scored from close range after good wing play by Dillion Sheppard.

Sheppard was at it again in the 18th minute when he played yet another brilliant cross into the box, and this time it was Oscar Ntwagae’s turn to finish off with a well-taken header.

The Pretoria-based 2005/06 Castle Premiership champions increased their tally to three when national under-23 striker Lerato Chabangu scored his second goal in two weeks in the 38th minute.

Santos were now at the mercy of Patrice Motsepe’s uncompromising squad and matters nearly got worse in the 40th minute, but Torrealba’s fierce shot missed the target.

Roger de Sa’s side managed to pull one back in the 52nd minute when Alenzo Rogers chipped a loose ball over the advancing Carlin Marlin.

Four minutes later, the Cape-based side almost made it 3-2 but stalwart Edries Burton’s attempt missed the upright by inches.

It was the ‘Brazilians’ who were to register yet another goal on the score sheet when Esrom Nyandoro converted brilliantly from the penalty spot deep in the second half.

Josta Dladla nearly made it five for ‘Downs in the last minute of the match, but his attempt was off-target.

This massive win gave yet another strong indication that the expensively-assembled side intends to make a strong challenge for major honours this season.

Former Mamelodi Sundowns, and Kaizer Chiefs coach Ted Dumitru has tipped Sundowns to go all the way in the SAA Supa8 Cup, as well as defending their Castle Premiership title.

Dumitru is of the opinion that Sundowns cannot fail with the amount of talent that they have.

“I have some nice feelings about Sundowns. They have exceptional talent and they play a close kind of football similar to what they played under me,” he told kick off.

“But again they have enough talent to take the Supa8 and go all the way to defend the league.”

However, Dumitru said this would not be easy.

“It will depend on their approach of the game. If their approach is right and they will be consistent, I have no doubt that they will defend the league though,” he said.

Asked about Chiefs’ chances in both the Supa8 and the league, the former Bafana Bafana coach has reservations. He said the Glamour Boys have not been impressive.

“I am still waiting for them to play good football. Perhaps if they can have the right approach, they can win things, but at the moment they are not impressing,” he added.

Moroka Swallows gave their cup ambitions a major boost when they beat Silver Stars 2-1 in their SAA Supa 8 quarter-final clash at the Germiston Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The 'Beautiful Birds' opened their scoring charts as early as the 17th minute when Mame Niang finished off Beven Fransman's headed cross with a tap-in.

Swallows were presented with brilliant a opportunity to increase their tally to two, but Cecil Oersen missed the target when he took a woeful shot in the 21st minute.

The Gavin Hunt-coached side seemed to have put their feet off the pedal after this miss and allowed Stars to launch a number of raids into their danger area.

December Ngobeni almost equalised for Stars in the 36th minute, but his close-range attempt was thwarted by the home side's Nigerian 'keeper Greg Etafia.

Oersen made amends for his earlier miss when he outran Stars' stalwart Willem Jackson and beat Stars stopper Wayne Sandilands with a brilliant shot in the 63rd minute.

The 2006/07 almost lost Etafia after a collision with Stars Johannes Motlhaping, but the highly-religious stopper was judged fit to continue to play between the posts.

Jackson pulled one back for the 'Lions of the North' deep in the second half, which a goal that provided what was to be a late motivation factor for Stars.

The Bafokeng Royal Palace-based side almost equalised in the 87th minute when Stanley Kgatla unleashed a fierce shot at the Swallows goals, but Etafia was on hand to thwart the attempt.

Stars late charge bore no fruit as Swallows sailed into the semi-finals after what coach Gavin Hunt said was a "good performance".

SuperSport United beat Orlando Pirates 6-5 on penalties to go through to the semi-finals of the SAA Supa 8 at Loftus Stadium on Saturday evening.

The match started at a frantic pace with both teams throwing everything at each other, but neither side created any good scoring opportunities during the first half.

Pirates had a good opportunity to take the lead in the 15th minute when they were awarded a free kick in a promising position, but Lucky Lekgwathi's well-taken shot was parried for a corner kick by United 'keeper Andre Arendse.

United's best chance of the half fell to Daine Klate on the stroke of half-time when he found himself unmarked just outside the Pirates box, but the midifielder sent his shot straight at Bucs keeper Francis Chansa.

The score remained 0-0 at half-time.

Pirates coach Milutin Sredojevic made three changes in the second half bringing in Benedict Vilakazi, Jabu Mahlangu and Haytham Tambal for Stanton Fredericks, Isaac Chansa and Lebohang Mokoena.

These substitutions seemed to change the complexion of the game as Pirates took control of the game, but the 'Buccaneers' could not penetrate the solid United defence.

United coach Pitso Mosimane took out Edward Williams and brought in Tico-Tico Bucuane to add some firepower upfront, but the Pirates defence continued to keep United strikers at bay.

The score remained 0-0 after 90 minutes and the match went into extra-time.

Just when people were waiting for the referee to blow his whistle for full-time - Vilakazi scored for Pirates, but substitute Tony Tsabedze equalised for United to send the match into penalties.

United then beat Pirates 6-5 on sudden death to go through to the semi-finals of the SAA Supa8 competition. Kelebogile Mabe missed the deciding penalty for Pirates

One was hoping to get Supersports. This Chiefs seem to have bewitched Swallows a long time ago. I hope Middendorp continues to put David Radebe on the bench, his other strikers are "impotent".
