Silver Stars’ midfielders, Stanley Kgatla and Koketso Mmotong jetted out of the country on sunday for trials in Sweden.

The two players are due to spend two weeks with Djurgardens, where they will undergo trials that could see them pursuing their careers in Europe.

Botswana and Township Rollers’ striker Moemedi 'Jomo' Moatlhaping has revealed that Silver Stars are interested in his services.

This comes after Owen Da Gama was seen at a derby match in Gaborone between Rollers and Gaborone United at the weekend.

“It’s true that they (Silver Stars) are interested in my services and this was confirmed by my bosses when they told me that they had spoken to Da Gama. But I can’t say anything else because I am still waiting on both Rollers and Stars,” he tells Kick Off.

Moatlhaping is a talented striker whose rise to prominence saw him make the Botswana national team under erstwhile coach Jelusic Veslin. He has been a member of the Zebras’ squad for the past two years and played an important role in their Cosafa Cup match against South Africa last month.

If the deal goes through, it will be a major signing for the Lions of the North.

The 23-year-old, who was linked to Jomo Cosmos earlier this season, helped Rollers win the League and Coca Cola Cup last year.

Silver Stars duo Stanley Kgatla and Koketso Mmotong were successful in their two weeks trials away, but unfortunately decided to turn down the offer from Swedish side Djurgardens.

Confirming the above was club (Stars) boss Larry Brookstone, who said it is unfortunate that the boys lost out on the big time after being home sick.

The club had offered them a good package that would have made them millionaires, but they could not cope with the fact that they would be away for two full years.

He did not want to reveal the money that they have lost out by staying at Stars, but KICK OFF learnt it was around R2million each per season.

After realising they were not happy staying that long in Europe, the Swedish club’s boss felt to cancel the deal, and was very disappointed to have lost out on travelling and accommodation costs.

The two returned back in the country last night. Their return could benefit Supersport United, who are looking to sign Katlego Mashego, but Stars would have been interested had Kgatla and Mmotong signed for Djurgardens.

Silver Stars' midfielder Stanley Kgatla who has just returned from trials with Swedish League champions Djurgaderns has no regrets that he failed to secure a contract overseas.

Kgatla, who has two Bafana Bafana caps, was initially linked with a move to Mamelodi Sundowns, but the deal did not materialise. He spent two weeks in Sweden together with teammate Koketso Mmotong, but they were not signed.

“It was a wonderful experience for me and I learnt a lot in the two weeks that I spent there; that’s why I have no regrets,” Kgatla says.

“As far as I am concerned, I did well and the technical team was pleased with my performance.

“The reason why I was not signed is perhaps because Stars and Djurgaderns did not agree on financial terms.

“I’m confident that the next time I get a chance to go overseas things will turn out differently,” he states.

Silver Stars coach Owen da Gama confirms that they are having a look at two Zimbabwean players, goalkeeper Tapuwa Kapini and midfielder Honour Gombani, both from Highlanders.

The two players came to the club during April for trials.
“Yes, we are having a look at them, but can’t make any decision at the moment. We will have to wait until our CEO Larry Brookstone returns from Europe at the end of the month,” Da Gama said.

Da Gama added that he is looking to add a defender, a midfielder, a striker and a goalkeeper to bolster his squad, and confirmed that they will also be having a look at Vasco da Gama goalkeeper Shuaib Walters.

The Silver Stars mentor squashed rumours suggesting that striker Fadlu Davids was set for a return to Cape Town.

“We are holding onto Fadlu. He didn’t play much because of injury last season, but apart from the injury, he is a perfect Silver Stars player, in terms of attitude and is very disciplined. We are happy with Fadlu and he is an integral part of the team.”

Gombami has played down the impact of his possible departure from Highlanders, saying that he can be replaced by a number of capable players.

“It will be disappointing to leave a club that has nurtured us into the players we are today. It always difficult to say goodbye but there is always a future that one has to move on to,” he says.

Silver Stars targets goalkeeper Tapuwa Kapini and midfielder Honour Gombami from Zimbabwe's Highlanders arrived in the country last night to finalise three year contacts at the Owen Da Gama coached side.

The pair left the Zimbawe on Tuesday evening. Kapini and Gombami who also play for the Warriors underwent successful trials with Stars in April and Da Gama has not hidden his desire to bring the duo to his club.

The deal is being worked out by Velaphi Sports Management, a company run by agent Clive Williams for Dean Sheehan's Loosemores.

At Stars, they will join former Highlanders captain Bekithemba Ndlovu, whose contract was recently extended by a further two years after a sterling performance in his first season at the club.

Zimbabwean defender Gilbert Banda, who has been in impressive form with Highlanders this season, has been linked with a dream move to Silver Stars just days after his club mates Honour Gombami and Tapuwa Kapini left for trials with the same club.

Banda, 23, a central defender and national team fringe player, also made an impression in the Four Nations tournament last weekend and it is no surprise he might move.

Clive Williams of Velaphi Sports Management is understood to be working out the deal with Stars for the former youth international who has been advised to sort out his travel arrangements immediately.

He is likely to join Silver Stars next week and should he be signed along Gombami and Kapini they will join former club mate Bekithemba Ndlovu at Stars.

His club Highlanders have also been notified about the trial stint.
"We cannot stand in the way of a player if he gets a good deal elsewhere and he and his club (Highlanders) are satisfied with the arrangement.

“It is a pity that we are continuing to lose players like this, but there is nothing we can do, we just have to go look what's on the market to get replacements," said club manager Emmet Ndlovu.

Silver Stars’ coach Owen da Gama says he is impressed by the progress made by Junaid Hartley, who is currently training with the Castle Premiership side.

Hartley, who has been described as a ‘wild child’ in the past, is back in South Africa following a stint in Malaysia, and is hoping to secure a contract with Silver Stars.

However, Da Gama revealed that although he is impressed by the midfielder, he has no intentions of signing the former Ajax Cape Town and Orlando Pirates star yet.

“I am concerned over his fitness and the amount of time that he has spent out of action, but he has impressed me with his work ethic. He is really trying hard.

“We don’t want to rush things and will still assess him over the next few weeks, for the benefit of both the club and the payer

Its possible .. Celtic havent beaten Silver Stars in a while ,and theyr playing @ home ..so its gon b tuff ..

I really respect Silver Stars , theyr a top team and wish them well in all they do .. considering they have very limited resoeurces , just look how far they have come ..

just by stickingtogther and having a plan , with a TOP coach who knows what he wants to do and manegment with a PLAN ( NOT buying a club for R 33 milion and then being bottom of the log )

this could be close call, but @ the end of the day , Siwelele are favourites ..

Contrary to all speculation, Owen da Gama is to stay on as coach at Silver Stars next season.

This emerged when George Khunou, MD of the Royal Bafokeng Sport Holdings, disclosed that they had acquired a 51 percent controlling interest in the Lions of the North.

Joe Mafulagasha and Larry Brookstone, who are co-founders of the club, will each retain 24.5 percent shares in the club.

Khunou added that the club will retain all players and Owen da Gama, their coach, for the coming soccer season.

Khunou says they will retain the name Silver Stars but may change it in future.

He said that in terms of the agreement - and subject to PSL approval - the club’s name will be changed to Platinum Stars, reflecting the historic association of both the North West province and the Royal Bafokeng with platinum mining in South Africa.

That announcement is expected sometime in June.

Thursday's acquisition of a 51% controlling interest in Premier Soccer League (PSL) club H.P. Silver Stars by Royal Bafokeng Sports Holdings (RBSH) is set to revolutionise football in South Africa’s North West Province, according to the new majority stakeholders.

RBSH is an operating subsidiary of Royal Bafokeng Holdings (RBH), investment vehicle of the Royal Bafokeng Nation (RBN).

RBSH Managing Director George Khunou said: "We are very pleased to have acquired this stake in a club of Silver Stars’ calibre; we envisage it becoming an important role-player in meeting the recreational objectives of the RBN’s ambitious Master plan for socio-economic development and, more specifically, a primary vehicle in fulfilling RBSH’s vision for a vibrant, healthy and patriotic community, transformed through sport."

Silver Stars CEO Larry Bookstone said: "While undoubtedly RBSH’s ownership stake and financial backing gives the club vital ‘muscle’ to help take it to the top of the Premier League, it is enormously exciting for all of us owners, management and players, to be able to identify with and be part of the RBN’s admirable drive to provide sporting and other developmental opportunities for people in the North West Province."

Silver Stars, inaugural winners of the high-stakes Telkom Cup in the 2006-07 season, finished second in the Soccer League PSL log table for 2006-07, after beating Kaizer Chiefs 2-1 on Sunday, thus qualifying for both the SAA Supa 8 Cup and CAF Cup competitions in the new season. The club has steadily improved its ranking each season since winning the Inland First division and being promoted to the Premier League in 2003-04.

In terms of the agreement announced today, and subject to PSL approval, the club’s name will be changed to Platinum Stars, reflecting the historic association of both the North West Province and the RBN with platinum mining in South Africa. RBSH will appoint three directors to the club’s board, one of whom will be Chairman.

Joe Mapfulagasha and Brookstone, who co-founded Silver Stars in 2000, each retain a 24.5% shareholding in the club.

The transaction announced today overtakes a five-year sponsorship agreement between the RBN and Silver Stars announced in January last year, when the Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace at Phokeng in the North West Province became Silver Stars’ ‘home’ ground.

Going forward, Khunou said RBSH envisaged a ‘three-tiered, developmental pyramid’ for soccer in the region.

"At the base of the pyramid is the development of soccer amongst children in the region from the age of six; in the middle is the further development of the sport amongst older players, including schools’ ‘elite’ players; and at the top there is Platinum Stars and the Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace to provide a national, and indeed, international focus for the sport. At each level of the pyramid we will work with major stakeholders in the region, including government, the South African Football Association (SAFA), mining companies and local communities."

In terms of soccer development amongst the youth, he said, RBSH had recently started a mass development programme in schools and villages in the Rustenburg Valley, working with a global leader in the field, Samba Soccer.

Other planned initiatives include the following:

· Sponsorship and hosting of international events at the Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace;
· A commercial partnership with Soccerex, the world’s leading soccer trade fair, to be held in Sandton in 2007, 2008 and 2009;
· Development of world-class sporting and related infrastructure over and above the upgrade of the Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace for the 2010 World Cup, scheduled to begin later this year; and
· Positioning the region as a destination of choice for foreign clubs and national teams seeking to train in South Africa prior to, during and after the World Cup.
