If Sir Alex Ferguson is to be believed -- and there is no reason to question the pronouncements of the inscrutable Manchester United manager in this matter -- the cream of the club's World Cup contingent will be missing from the coming three-game tour of South Africa.
The United manager has reiterated that no players whose national team has qualified for the quarter-finals of the World Cup in Germany will feature in the games against Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates.
And this will rule out such stalwarts as England's Wayne Rooney, Rio Ferdinand and Gary Neville, Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo, Argentina's Gabriel Heinze and France's Mikael Silvestre.
Ferguson has said it is inconceivable not to give the players a break from soccer in the off-season and effectively keep them playing for a gruelling 21 months of continuous club and
international competition.
In addition, United's charismatic Dutch striker, Ruud van Nistelrooy, is another of the club's superstars who is expected to be a non-starter for South Africa after seemingly falling out with
Ferguson towards the tail-end of last season -- a situation that has invariably resulted in the player being shown the exit at Old Trafford.
Organisers of the South African venture, however, remain adamant United will remain a major attraction in South Africa with players of the calibre of Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes and a host of burgeoning talent.
